I actually PAID to see Vanilla Ice in concert way back. To be fair, I took an amazingly hot chick who used me for tickets. Ahh good times. Information society did open for him so I got to see that "pure energy" song performed live.

^ ^ Funny how they were saying the same thing about Elvis back in the day, that people only like the music because it's a white man singing it, which may have been what Ice was referring to at the beginning of this clip when he correctly identified himself as "not Elvis."

Did you see the awkward handshake mistake at the end? Arsenio comes in from up high with the fist, obviously expecting another fist to tap, but Ice comes up from the bottom with an open hand for a grab. He grabs the fist, but Arsenio smartly opens up for shake. Like the video, the handshake started awkwardly but seemed to pull through at the end.

Racist? The guy was a white entertainer trying to break into a field predominantly characterized by black entertainers, and doing it on the most superficial level possible. Of course he would be criticized for being out of touch with the roots of the music, and the worst thing he could do in response would be to say "Hey, I'm cool - I have a black friend *that I brought with me for show and tell*!" Doesn't mean that he or anyone else was racist, just sort of pathetic in that adorable early 90's way.

Why would Arsenio Hall be racist (in this clip)? Vanilla Ice is being a ridiculous wigger, and Arsenio is trying to find out if he has any justification for his pathetic behavior. Which he doesn't. I'd recommend 'wigger' over 'racism' for this one.

Well they're both making principled stances here, and both have fallen into obscurity.
Vanilla Ice's 15 minutes of fame came and went, and Arsenio's principles led to his invitation of Louis Farrakhan on the show leading to his cancellation.
