It's stupid to ignore someone in a discussion.
I agree.
All discussions aren't created equal. I'm much more interested in debates when there's the possibility that someone's mind is open and might be changed. When they listen to the other side. When both parties have the option to grow from hearing new points that aren't typically in their realm of knowledge.
Watching two opposing parties stand on top of soap boxes and yell at each… that's much less interesting. Their minds are closed; they're not listening to one another, and there's no hope of moving to new interesting positions.
We had a billboard preacher come to my college some years ago. He stood in front of the student union and pulled out his favorite arguments on why we were all going to hell. As it turned out, we were studying the bible that week, and engaged in what we thought was debate. As a whole, we made argument after argument, destroying the positions he took. He never made a solid argument, not once. The frustrating part was that he never accepted any of our arguments. Any time we'd win a point, he'd ignore it and move on to his next argument. Over and over.
Communication is the attempt to convey ideas from one person to another. If there's no possibility those ideas will take root, then there's no point in communication.
